Second Step Wins his Group 1

10th August 2015
AFTER going more than four years without a top-flight winner, Luca Cumani celebrated a second in a fortnight when Jamie Spencer conjured a strong late flourish from Second Step in the Grosser Preis von Berlin at Hoppegarten.

Second Step, running in the colours of Craig Bennett's Merry Fox Stud, got up in the final 50 yards in the 125th running of the 1m4f Group 1 to score by three-parts of a length from front-runner Ito, with the 6-4 favourite and German Derby winner Nutan another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Cumani, who took his tally of countries in which he has won a Group race to 13, said: "That was a really exciting race. I must compliment the runner-up, who set a strong pace and kept on right to the end. I wasn't at all sure we would get him, but my horse stays really well.

"We'll probably go next to the Irish St Leger as a mile and three-quarters at the Curragh should be right up his street."

Second Step is out of the Sadler's Wells mare My Dark Rosaleen, who was bought at Tattersalls December Sales 2008 by Badgers Bloodstock for 190,000gns.
